How to Caulk Gaps Between Trim and Finished Floor

It is not uncommon that floors are not perfectly flat and if you lay a product that is less forgiving of those imperfections such as LVT, you may notice unsightly gaps between the trim and the hard surface. The gap can be carefully caulked and painted if you run into this problem!

Investment

Money | $3 - $20 depending on what supplies you already have

Time | 1 hour or less

Steps

  • Identify gap. Apply painters tape right up against the edge of the trim so it is perfectly in line with the rest and extend two inches beyond the length of your gap.

  • Cut your caulk tip at a 45 degree angle and don’t make the hole real big, just do the tip of the tube. Run a bead along the gap. Don’t use more than what you need, but enough to fill it.

  • Run your wet finger over the caulk to ensure it is pushed into the gap and has a tight seal. Clean up any excess from the trim with your finger or damp towel.

  • Remove tape, unless you need to paint it, then see step below.

  • If you need to paint your trim. Let caulk dry 30 minutes (and no more) and use your trim paint to cover the caulk. Don’t put much paint on your brush; this is a tiny area and you only need a tiny amount of paint! Carefully remove tape immediately.

Enjoy the Project
